Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik gives $10 million to Duke University

Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik has donated $10 million to his alma mater, Duke University. The Vinik Faculty Challenge Fund, announced Tuesday, will be used to hire 10 new professors dedicated to studying and addressing issues that affect quality of life. The professors will work primarily in Duke's Pratt School of Engineering and will study in the related fields of energy, brain sciences, environment and global health.

"Universities will be at the forefront in developing creative solutions to the most pressing problems of our time," Duke University president Richard Brodhead said in a statement. "We're tremendously grateful to the Vinik family for building Duke's research and teaching capacities in this crucial area."

Vinik also pledged last year to donate a total of $10 million over the course of four years to selected local charities.
