TAMPA — The president of the Tampa Club said he asked members last month to pay an additional assessment fee to provide "additional revenue." However, Ron Licata said Friday that the downtown business group is not in a dire financial situation.

"We are not going close the doors anytime soon," he said, adding that the club is currently planning events for next year.

Licata said he sought the fee to "get ahead" before the club "runs into a bad situation." Private clubs have "limited ways to generate funds," such as membership fees and operating fees from hosting private events, fundraisers, weddings and private parties, he said.

The Tampa Club, founded in 1981, is located inside the Bank of America Plaza. As a private club, its membership size is not disclosed.

"If I was not worried, I should not be the president," Licata said, in reference to the pressure to keep any operation afloat. "I know our club is going to be fine."
