A mix that makes for fog in bay area
With Monday's blast of fog, it may have some in the area wondering: Is this fog season? "It is true this time of year in Florida we get more fog," said Tyler Fleming, a forecaster with the National Weather Service. "As it gets cooler and the warm air comes off the gulf, they will combine and the moisture will condense and form fog." Tampa Bay has been getting all the right ingredients for foggy weather: lower temperatures, moisture close to the ground and a light wind. The light breeze and cool air condense the moisture, which leaves the air cloudy. "But I wouldn't necessarily call it a season," said Bay News 9 meteorologist Juli Marquez. A cool front near Thanksgiving will bring strong winds that will push the fog away, Marquez said. By Friday, lows will be in the 40s and 50s.
Teen driver to be sentenced in death
Davis Islands teenager Jordan Valdez is expected to plead guilty and be sentenced today in a hit-and-run case that left a homeless woman dead. Attorneys didn't reach a plea agreement, so the 17-year-old's fate will be decided by Hillsborough Circuit Judge Chet Tharpe. Prosecutors aren't seeking prison time but want Valdez punished as an adult for a charge of leaving the scene of an accident with death. The teen's defense attorney will argue for juvenile sanctions.
Gifts, donations for burned mom's kids
The classmates of Audrey Mabrey, the Apollo Beach woman police say was set on fire by her husband, are taking donations of clothing and toys for her two sons. Their ages are 4 years and 18 months, said Ashley Carl, a spokeswoman for Hillsborough Community College's SouthShore campus, where Mabrey was a student. Toys, clothes and Size 3 diapers can be donated at student services at 551 24th St. NE, Ruskin. The family's possessions were destroyed in the fire that left Mabrey, 26, burned over 80 percent of her body. The family has set up a trust that is accepting donations at any Bank of America.
