PATEL FAMILY COMMITS $200 MILLION FOR CLEARWATER MEDICAL SCHOOL
Tampa Bay philanthropists Dr. Kiran Patel and his wife, Dr. Pallavi Patel are spending $200 million to create and promote a Tampa Bay regional campus for the private Nova Southeastern University. Their commitment to the Fort Lauderdale-based university — $50 million in a cash donation and $150 million toward real estate the Patels would continue to control — would rank among the largest individual commitments to a college or university.
RICK SCOTT'S OFFICE DELETED CRITICAL MESSAGES RELATED TO NURSING HOME DEATHS
As Florida continues to pick up the pieces in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, more confusion builds around the 11 heat-related deaths at a South Florida nursing home following the storm earlier this month. But a critical issue - whether or not administrators from the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills in Broward County made distress calls for help to Gov. Rick Scott's private cellphone - will likely not be cleared up soon. On Sunday, the Florida governor's office revealed the four key voice mails from the center have been deleted.
ANTHONY WEINER SENTENCED TO 21 MONTHS IN SEXTING CASE
Former Rep. Anthony Weiner was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison for sexting with a 15-year-old girl in a case that rocked Hillary Clinton's campaign for the White House in the closing days of the race and may have cost her the presidency.
HEAR IDEAS FOR REMAKING DOWNTOWN TAMPA INTERCHANGE
New concepts for rebuilding the downtown interchange will be discussed at a Florida Department of Transportation community meeting tonight. Local DOT officials plan to share ideas for the interchange during the second community working group session for downtown and east Tampa that will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Barrymore Hotel Tampa Riverwalk, 111 W Fortune St. The working groups are part of Tampa Bay Next, the department's overhaul of its highly criticized Tampa Bay Express toll road program. LIGHTNING TO RETIRE VINNY LECAVALIER'S NO. 4
When Marty St. Louis became the first Lightning player to have his jersey retired back in January, it was hard not to think that former captain Vinny Lecavalier would be the next one. Soon, their jerseys will be hung side-by-side in the Amalie Arena rafters. The Lightning announced today that Lecavalier's No. 4 will be retired on Feb. 10, when the Los Angeles Kings are in Tampa.
