FAA investigating report of near miss at Tampa International

TAMPA — Federal aviation authorities say they are investigating the report of an aircraft flying too close to a jetliner coming in for a landing Tuesday at Tampa International Airport.

"AirTran Flight 216, a Boeing 717, was descending to land at the airport when the crew reported that an unidentified aircraft appeared a short distance away at about 3 p.m.," the FAA said in a statement Thursday. "The AirTran flight landed safely."

According to several flight tracking websites, the jet was arriving in Tampa from Atlanta.
