TAMPA — The traffic snarl that backed up Veterans Expressway at Hillsborough Avenue early Friday wasn’t because of a fender bender but a vehicle-on-bald-eagle collision.

The eagle was trying to snack on a roadside raccoon when it was hit by a car, according to the Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife. The injured raptor is now in that sanctuary’s care after breaking its wing.

Two Marines noticed what happened and reached out to animal rescuers, the sanctuary said on its Facebook page. It took the Marines, four Florida Highway Patrol officers and two animal rescuers to wrangle the injured bird and get it to safety.

The bird appears to be stable, but was getting checked out by veterinarians on Friday afternoon.
