Drivers beware: I-4 closures near Lakeland coming this weekend

LAKELAND — Track repairs on a railroad overpass near Lakeland will force lanes of Interstate 4 below to close for hours this weekend.

First, a segment of I-4's westbound lanes is set to close between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday. Regional traffic will be directed off at Exit 41.

Then, a segment of the eastbound lanes is set to close between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. Sunday. Regional traffic will leave the interstate at Exit 27.

In each case, drivers will be diverted to the Polk Parkway. Tolls will be suspended on the parkway during each detour -- first westbound, then eastbound.

Local traffic for the Lakeland area may continue past those exits. Saturday, local drivers may leave at Exit 32. Sunday, local drivers may leave at Exit 28.

The detours, according to the Florida Department of Transportation, are because CSX is performing work on the Kathleen Road rail overpass.
