Gasparilla Distance Classic brings Tampa road closures this weekend

Race will bring road closures on weekend

Runners take to the streets this weekend for races in the Gasparilla Distance Classic, and police will be closing some roads to traffic Saturday and Sunday to make way for them.

Parts of Bayshore Boulevard as well as streets affecting downtown and Davis Islands, will be closed to cars on both days. For the road closure schedule, which starts at 3 a.m., visit the police department's web page at

Tampa police are planning to have more security at the event, as they have done at this year's Gasparilla parades. The efforts will include the use of bomb-sniffing dogs, a more visible presence with tactical teams placed at spots along the route and the use of aerial platforms and closed-circuit cameras.

The Gasparilla Distance Classic, whose title sponsor is Publix, includes a 5K and 15K on Saturday and a half-marathon and 8K on Sunday.
