Two bicyclists killed in Hillsborough crashes

Two bicyclists were killed Friday night, one in a hit-and-run crash in Ruskin and another in an incident east of Tampa.

Antonio Leon was riding his bicycle on 21st Avenue in Ruskin about 7 p.m. when he was hit from behind by a vehicle traveling between 45 mph and 55 mph. The driver left the scene, heading west on 21st Avenue, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. Leon, 56, was nearing his home when he was struck, according to deputies.

The vehicle is believed to be a green 2003-2005 Saturn Ion, with front-end damage that may include blue or silver paint from Leon's bicycle. Anyone with any information can contact the Sheriff's Office at (813) 247-8200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-8477.

About 6:30 p.m., a bicyclist collided with a car at U.S. 301 and E Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The bicyclist, Anthony S. Del Favero, was heading east on Martin Luther King Boulevard in the right-turn lane. The driver, Jennifer Johnson of Tampa, was northbound on U.S. 301 in a 2009 Honda Civic. Johnson, 36, of Tampa, had a green light as she approached the intersection, the FHP said. Del Favero, 47, of Tampa crossed into the car's path, according to investigators. He was not wearing a helmet and later died at Tampa General Hospital.
