TARPON SPRINGS — A man and a woman died Sunday when their car struck a pole and caught fire while they were trapped inside.

Their names and ages had not been released Sunday evening.

Tarpon Springs police Officer John Gibson and a Pinellas County sheriff's deputy saw the car on fire just before 3:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. 19 and Beckett Way.

Gibson and the deputy weren't able to put out the fire, but they pulled the woman from the Mazda. They weren't able to pull the man from the driver's seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said the victims had been driving north on U.S. 19 when they hit the pole, a traffic light control post.
