A little less than a month before hurricane season officially commences, a storm system off the Atlantic coast of Florida could become a tropical cyclone by week's end, according to forecasters.

The National Hurricane Center on Wednesday issued an alert saying that the system carried disorganized showers and thunderstorms but had a 60 percent chance of becoming a cyclone within two days. That could mean a tropical depression or storm, not necessarily a hurricane.

As of early Wednesday, the showers were off the east coast of Florida and around the northwestern Bahamas, according to a Hurricane Center map. Forecasters expect it to move slowly northward.
