Get the blankets: Cooler weather blows in across Tampa Bay area today

Heather Higdon, 42, bundles up a bit as she gets some work done Tuesday at Upham Beach in St. Pete Beach. “I’m a born-and-raised Floridian. If it’s under 80, it’s chilly with a breeze,” she said. “Like the water is 75 degrees. That’s freezing.” Higdon, a Pinellas County native who has lived along the beaches, now lives in Tampa. “When it’s a stressful day, sometimes it’s nice to work on the beach.”

The high temperature today won't make it out of the 60s because of a cold front that moved through the area overnight. Even more remarkable will be the wind. Forecasters issued a gale warning from Tarpon Springs to the Suwanee River. Winds could blow at 40 mph or more. Forecasters at Bay News 9 suggested boaters stay off the water. The low temperature tonight will be the coldest we've seen this fall — in the low 50s around Tampa Bay and in the 40s along the north Suncoast. It will warm up into the high 70s Thursday and into the weekend, though rain chances increase to 50 percent on Friday and Saturday.
