Grab your blankets, Tampa Bay: it could get frosty outside

As New Englanders experience the worst winter misery in decades, Tampa Bay area residents should expect colder weather in the coming days, meteorologists said. Weather throughout the week is expected to be dry and breezy, with highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s or less, said Mike Clay, a Bay News 9 meteorologist. Citrus and Hernando counties may even dip below freezing. Tampa International Airport last hit freezing temperatures on Jan. 13, 2011, according to the National Weather Service. Meteorologist Tyler Fleming said the coldest temperatures will arrive Sunday night into Monday morning. The low will be 38 degrees in Tampa; 43 in St. Petersburg; and 30 in Brooksville. The trigger to open many cold weather shelters is wind chill at freezing or below. "We're monitoring the weather," said Julie Watkinson, community relations coordinator with Hillsborough County, "but right now it's too early to tell."
