Matthew weakens to tropical depression

Tropical Storm Matthew was downgraded to a depression Saturday, weather officials said.

The weakened system is still expected to bring heavy rain to Belize and other Central American countries.

At 1 p.m., maximum sustained winds were near 35 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Matthew will likely weaken even more in the next day or two, weather officials said.

"It's most likely not going to strengthen," said Diane Kacmarik, meteorologist for Bay News 9. "Computer models are still hinting that something could develop to the east of that, though."
