TAMPA — The heat was on Thursday as the Tampa Bay area sweltered in record high temperatures.
Tampa's 91-degree weather — more than 8 degrees above the average — made it feel more like August than October. The previous record high for Oct. 29 was 88 degrees, set in 1984, said John McMichael, a forecaster for the National Weather Service.
Two other cities made a 10 degree jump from the average as well.
Lakeland topped out at 95 degrees Thursday, breaking its previous record of 91 degrees, which, like Tampa, occurred in 1984. And Brooksville warmed up to 93 degrees, surpassing the record 91 degree temperature recorded in 1939.
"We had some records broken," McMichael said.
But National Weather Service forecasts indicate the temperature will slip back down into the 80s over the weekend, lending hope to revelers who don't want to install sweat guards in their Halloween costumes.
