TAMPA — Nearly 100 residents of a retirement community were evacuated Monday morning after water began to flood the building, officials said.
Tropical Storm Debby dumped a record amount of rain on Tampa over the weekend, and isn't expected to let up for several days, increasing the risks of floods. With water already rising up to the building, officials at the Sunrise Village Retirement Homes, 11722 N 17th St., decided to evacuate residents.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office and Hillsborough County Fire Rescue responded to the scene just before 10 a.m. Monday.
The evacuation is voluntary for now, and is a precaution, officials said.
Residents were expected to take Hartline or school buses to other facilities in the area associated with Sunrise Villiage.
