Cuban blogger to launch news site

Cuba's best-known blogger says she will start publishing a general-interest newspaper online today in a move that will test both the government's openness to free expression and the dissident's ability to build a following inside her country. Yoani Sanchez and her husband, Reinaldo Escobar, say they have been working with a staff of nine and contributors from around the island to produce a regularly updated website and a weekly PDF of a paper dedicated to providing Cubans with essential information — rather than attacking the government. Sanchez has gained a string of foreign awards for her blog, "Generation Y," which offers scathing criticism of the communist government. She has more than 600,000 followers on Twitter, but is far less known inside Cuba, where Internet access is expensive.

High cholesterol lowers fertility

Couples with high cholesterol have more difficulty conceiving than those with normal levels of the substance in their blood, researchers reported Tuesday, in what they called the first study to link fertility difficulties to the fat molecule commonly associated with cardiovascular problems. In a study of 501 couples who were trying to conceive, the time it took for the woman to become pregnant was longest if both partners had high cholesterol, according to the study by the National Institutes of Health, the University at Buffalo and Emory University in Atlanta. It was published online in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
