Police: 1 dead after shooting at New Year's Eve party

Gunfire broke out at a New Year's Eve house party in Calgary, leaving one person dead and six others injured, including one in critical condition, police said Thursday. Detective Steve Adair said police received multiple calls just after 5 a.m. reporting shots fired at the party attended by more than 50 people. He said by the time officers arrived, the suspect or suspects had already fled. Police found five people in and around the house with gunshot wounds. Adair said two other people later showed up at hospitals for treatment. Police said they don't know how many suspects are involved and don't have a motive for the shootings.

More than 900 cars burned in celebration

France's Interior Ministry says 940 cars were set alight by revelers ringing in the New Year — 12 percent fewer than the 1,067 set aflame last year. The figures issued on Thursday show that, despite the dip, setting fire to parked cars remains a firmly entrenched way for some French to send out the old and ring in the new. Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said on BFM-TV that numerous cars were burned around the country, particularly in the east, as well as in suburban Paris. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Parisians thronged the tightly guarded Champs-Elysees Avenue to welcome 2015.

In divorce, Musk's wife gets $16M cash

When Elon Musk split up with wife, Talulah Riley, for the first time, he told the whole world. "It was an amazing four years. I will love you forever," the Tesla entrepreneur tweeted to the British actress in January 2012. "You will make someone very happy one day." Eighteen months later, that happy person apparently was him, as they tied the knot again in July 2013. The rekindled romance didn't last. On New Year's Eve, Musk filed for divorce in Los Angeles. The couple said they were splitting amicably and that Musk agreed to give Riley $16 million in cash and other assets as part of a financial settlement, according to a joint statement. A divorce filing said property would be split based on a prenuptial agreement. Musk made a fortune co-founding PayPal and has gone on to start Tesla Motors and SpaceX. Riley appeared in Pride and Prejudice, Inception and St. Trinians. The couple first wed in 2010; they don't have any children, but Musk has five sons from a previous marriage. Musk and Riley have lived apart the past five months while Riley wrote and directed her first feature film, Scottish Mussel, in the United Kingdom. Musk did not tweet news of the divorce Wednesday.

Mortgage rates defy experts' predictions

When 2014 began, the 30-year mortgage rate was at 4.5 percent, and nearly all economists believed it would rise to 5 percent or higher by this time, mainly because the Federal Reserve was ending one of its key stimulus measures: the massive purchases of Treasury securities and mortgage bonds. But when the year ended, the average rate for a conventional 30-year home loan was 3.87 percent. Rates have been kept down by a number of factors, including dormant inflation in the United States and weakening economies and rising political tensions abroad.

Two West Virginia police officers were injured in a New Year's Day shootout when they stopped a suspected stolen vehicle and the driver opened fire, an emergency dispatch official said. The two Lewisburg officers, and the driver, were being treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, said Donna Hinkle, administrator of the Greenbrier County 911 center. A second man was also arrested when he passed the scene and opened fire at the officers before he left Interstate 64 westbound and was captured about 90 minutes later in woods, Hinkle said.
