Hillsborough County School District Partnership
Welcome to the St. Petersburg Times Newspaper in Education program!
We are proud to welcome the Hillsborough County Schools Summer Reading
camps as participants of our Sizzling Summer
Times Reader program. A newspaper for every child will be sent to participating
schools each day.
We hope you will be pleased to see the variety of ways the Times
can be used in the classroom, at home and on the Web. If you do not have time during a Reading Camp day to use the Times, we encourage you to send the newspapers home with the students. Some of the resources described below are easily downloaded so
you can send copies home with the paper for family use.

every subject and grade level! Check out tampabay.com/nie/ for
weekly lesson plans, downloadable activities

In addition to the "Extra! Extra! Read All About It" NIE
library supplement, we have some great resources and lesson ideas for
using the Times to engage your summer readers and their families.

Schools summer reading book lists, an Elementary Activities handout

Be sure to check out the summer HOT SPOT in the classified section of the Times. Each day students can go to the HOT SPOT ad in the Times classified section that will offer up fun facts on subjects such as health and fitness, the arts, character education, science, sports and safety. The HOT SPOTs suggest elementary and middle/high school activities students can try at school or at home using information they can find inside the newspaper. Participating students are eligible for prizes and a big drawing at the end of the summer.

This monitored discussion board is a great way for your students
to have authentic writing experiences with an audience that ranges far beyond your classroom. Similar reading camps in Pinellas County middle schools used this tool successfully last summer
and have expanded its use for this summer's
program. Click on the Azalea and Meadowlawn
categories to read the messages teachers posted for their students and
the students' responses. We have created a category for our Hillsborough
Summer Reader camps and teachers are welcome to submit topic ideas to
our bandmaster at firstname.lastname@example.org. For
step-by-step directions on how to use a blog click
