We are a stalwart and stouthearted people, and never more so than in hard times. People weep in the dark and arise in the morning and go to work. The waves crash on your nest egg and a chunk is swept away and you put your salami sandwich in the brown bag and get on the bus. In Philly, a woman earns $10.30/hour to care for a man brought down by cystic fibrosis. She bathes and dresses him in the morning, brings him meals, puts him to bed at night. It's hard work lifting him and she has suffered a painful hernia that, because she can't afford health insurance, she can't get fixed, but she still goes to work because he'd be helpless without her. There are a lot of people like her. I know because I'm related to some of them.

Low dishonesty and craven cynicism sometimes win the day but not inevitably. The attempt to link Barack Obama to an old radical in his neighborhood has desperation and deceit written all over it. Meanwhile, stunning acts of heroism stand out, such as the fidelity of military lawyers assigned to defend detainees at Guantanamo Bay — uniformed officers faithful to their lawyerly duty to offer a vigorous defense even though it means exposing the injustice of military justice that is rigged for conviction and the mendacity of a commander in chief who commits war crimes. If your law school is looking for a name for its new library, instead of selling the honor to a fat cat alumnus, you should consider the names of Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift, Lt. Col. Mark Bridges, Col. Steven David, Lt. Col. Sharon Shaffer, Lt. Cmdr. Philip Sundel and Maj. Michael Mori.

It was dishonest, cynical men who put forward a clueless young woman for national office, hoping to juice up the ticket, hoping she could skate through two months of chaperoned campaigning, but the truth emerges: The lady is talking freely about matters she has never thought about. The American people have an ear for B.S. They can tell when someone's mouth is moving and the clutch is not engaged. When she said, "One thing that Americans do at this time, also, though, is let's commit ourselves just every day, American people, Joe Sixpack, hockey moms across the nation, I think we need to band together and say never again. Never will we be exploited and taken advantage of again by those who are managing our money and loaning us these dollars," people smelled gas.

Some Republicans adore her because they are pranksters at heart and love the consternation of grown-ups. The ne'er-do-well son of the old Republican family as president, the idea that you increase government revenue by cutting taxes, the idea that you cut social services and thereby drive the needy into the middle class, the idea that you overthrow a dictator with a show of force and achieve democracy at no cost to yourself — one stink bomb after another, and now Gov. Palin.

She is a chatty sportscaster who lacks the guile to conceal her vacuity, and she was John McCain's first major decision as nominee. This troubles independent voters, and now she is a major drag on his candidacy. She will get a nice book deal from Regnery and a new career making personal appearances for 40 grand a pop, and she'll become a trivia question, "What politician claimed foreign policy expertise based on being able to see Russia from her house?" And the rest of us will have to pull ourselves out of the swamp of Republican economics.

Your broker kept saying, "Stay with the portfolio, don't jump ship," and you felt a strong urge to dump the stocks and get into the money market where at least you're not going to lose your shirt, but you didn't do it and didn't do it, and now you're holding a big bag of brown bananas. Me, too. But at least I know enough not to believe desperate people who are talking trash. Anybody who got whacked last week and still thinks McCain-Palin is going to lead us out of the swamp and not into a war with Iran is beyond persuasion in the English language. They'll need to lose their homes and be out on the street in a cold hard rain before they connect the dots.

The world has long needed a second coming of Edward R. Murrow. Would you like to apply for the job?
by Luath Oct 13, 2008 11:29 AM
I think you give the american people too much credit. If we are so quick to "spot b.s" , and recognize when someone isn't telling it like it is, then why do suppose we keep voting every 4 years, for the same liars in different suits? Sounds ignorant
by Margie Oct 13, 2008 11:29 AM
Agree with this author 100%. I'm sick of a press afraid to say the words lie, liar, and criminal. I'm sick of a part of the population that screams "liberal" as if it's a dirty word while they are busy defending the indefensible and spewing hatred.
by James Oct 13, 2008 11:29 AM
I really enjoy how the Republican's ran 20 of the last 28 years in Washington, and they blame democrates for the countries ills. Republicans are the liberals, your president Bush just used my money to bail out his thug friends. Now banks, socialist!
by Sam Oct 13, 2008 11:29 AM
Interesting that the naysayers to Mr. Keillor have nothing to offer but ad hominem attacks. If elected McCain/Palin will turn this country into a feudal fiefdom - which their party wants. Feudal rule for all with us as the serfs.
by Ron Oct 13, 2008 11:29 AM
Amen Gary! Silent Sarah shames our democracy. She seeks the second highest office in the land, but refuses to answer the questions of those for whom she wishes to work? Guess we should just "trust" her for now and get to know her later? Yeah, right.
by Wayne Oct 13, 2008 11:29 AM
That's quite a rant about McCain-Palin, can you please tell me how Obama is any better? The man knows very little about the economy, very little about international affairs, but he's going to save the day? That makes my BS meter go off at high volume
by KDWC Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
Great words..but why are the world masses trusting the educated and wealthy to protect them ? Very Few trust the greatest man that ever lived Jesus who now wields the sword of Destruction DANIEL 2:44 before it finally crashes.VOTE Jehovah Jesus WIN!
by Ken Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
"McCain wants the State to buy your home. You will pay your mortgage to the State. Is that Socialism?" No; That's more like mercantilism. Socialism is people pooling their resources and then spending it in a considered manner to benefit all.
by John Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
absolutely the worst article i have ever read.
by Jennie Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
"anyone who votes for a muslim,a disciple of reverend wright supporter" - isn't that a contradiction?
by roland Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
What a bunch of crap. Why don't you write the truth about this radical extremist who is called the Messiah. Funny the media looks the other way. Be FAIR AND BALANCED
by Patricia Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
Your quoting Governor Palin as saying she could see Russia from her house, alone indicates that you must not actually listen to what she has said herself, but rather what the liberal media has regurgitated to you.
by Paul Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
You just know that when an American trots out that word "liberal" with a snarl then what follows is going to be an embarrassment of chronic ignorance and stupidity. Let it flow Mary, leatherneck, Lyshum and the rest of you. Give us all a laugh.
by Shirley Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
"by Mary Oct 12, 2008 1:40 PM The art.is the BS!Palin has forgotten more than Obama ever knew wether knowledge or politics!" You cannot be serious Obama has Law degree from Harvard, Palin went to a JC then Univ of Idaho and it took forever
by Ruth Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
This is so true.... the scary part is the people who will vote for McCain-Palin. Is everyone stupid???
by Marlene Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
Thank you Garrison Keillor for a well-written factual article - if only it would reach those who need to understand it...
by Marlene Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
anyone spewing non-facts about Palin being able to say the remotest of intelligent verbiage deserves what this last administration has done to them - but not the rest of us.
by Frank Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
St. Pete Times keep printing this hate of anything Republican and you will lose half of your readership. I know I purchased my last copy of your Sunday paper last week after 12 years. Today I purchased the Tampa Tribune.Keep it up.
by Max Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
Isn't this "Garrison Keillor" that Fat Gay guy on PBS, no wonder he has a problem with an attractive female. Didn't take long for him to find people that think like him did it.
by Dan Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
Beautifully said. I am sure you will ignore the stupid comments, like the people here who disgrace all Americans by calling Obama a muslim.
by Mary Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
...just another lipsstick carrying wolf-hunter....please god no hockey mom's for president. Every time a child enters a public school a parent has agreed to a valuable social service.
by Chris Oct 13, 2008 11:27 AM
After reading some of these comments, my B.S detector went off again. You could almost slip on the drool. Regarding the article. As always, nicely done and on the money Mr. Keillor.
by Debbie Oct 13, 2008 11:26 AM
McCain is an angry old man who thinks that being a p.o.w. should automatically make him president. He coudn't be more wrong. He's a just a fraction of a man. Palin is a shrill, sarcastic, bleating moron. Neither is qualified to govern this country.
by Mike Oct 13, 2008 11:26 AM
Garrison Keillor, Socialist Columnist What part of Liberal Fantasy Land are you living in?
by ValuesVoter Oct 13, 2008 11:26 AM
Leatherneck, you "should have YOUR head examined." After eight years of the criminal boosh, you are still living in a bubble? Google this: USS Forrestel, for starters. Read it all. Next, google AIP. Palin lives with a terrorist!!
by Dale Oct 13, 2008 11:26 AM
I couldn't have said it better myself. Why people continue to vote contrary to their own best interests shows us something. Maybe the failure of our no (rich) child left behind FCAT education system?
by Sharon Oct 13, 2008 11:21 AM
This editorial approaches, no, maybe even surpasses greatness. Thank you for speaking for all of us.
by Adam Oct 13, 2008 11:21 AM
I have never commented on a website before. But Mr. Keillor, a personal hero of mine, has expressed my feelings far more eloquently than i ever could. Once again he has made me proud to be an American thinker. Thank You.
by Michael Oct 13, 2008 11:21 AM
right on point, this is exactly what most of americans think !!! they spit in our face when they tried to shove palin down our throats, but it didn't work, and now look at the polls ))))
by Marcia Hutchinson Oct 13, 2008 11:21 AM
Thank you, G.K. You are right on the money...so to speak.
by john Oct 13, 2008 11:21 AM
Spreading hatred and suspicion will not work this time. Cute is no substitute for intelligence. Past ?Might? no longer makes ?right?. The time has come for thoughtful international diplomacy/ engagement and thoughtful domestic restructuring. Capital and socialism have recently lost their meaning. Love and charity Must rule over vanity and greed. Let?s hope we are receptive to the change.
by Shawn Michel de Montaigne Oct 13, 2008 11:21 AM
And not even then, Mr. Keillor. Most Republicans are so brainwashed that not even homelessness would bring them around.
by judi Oct 13, 2008 11:21 AM
Great thoughts I could not agree more..I do worry how there could be so many others who see "great" things coming from a McCain-Palin ticket? Can anyone tell me what a "victory" in Iraq would look like?
by Barbara Oct 13, 2008 11:21 AM
Great piece, unfortunatly those that should read and think probably will never see it and choose not to lest it open their little minds.
