Ernest Hooper: Nobody ever told Bob Samuels that he couldn't

Bob Samuels passed away Sunday after setting an example of perseverance, determination and action for all to follow.

After a successful banking career in New York, Samuels, 74, started his second life in Tampa 20 years ago. Along the way, he not only battled prostate cancer, but he also raised awareness so others didn't have to endure the same fate. He founded the Florida Prostate Cancer Network with former Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf and launched what would eventually become the African-American Men's Health Forum.

That endeavor and others that improved the community reflected a drive that arose from his humble Philadelphia upbringing.

He published his memoir earlier this year and the title, Don't Tell Me I Can't!, tells you all you need to know about the man. …

Kudos to the Association of Fundraising Professionals for recognizing some of the area's top philanthropic efforts.

At a luncheon last week, the association honored: Lightning owners Jeff and Penny Vinik, JP Morgan Chase, Georgette's Boutique, Elise B. Minkoff, Julie Weintraub, the Academy of Holy Names volleyball and swimming teams and the University of South Florida's Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement. …

The Taste of Pinellas will go on hiatus because of declining attendance and won't occur in 2013. The 2012 Clearwater Jazz Holiday reported smaller crowds after charging for the first time.

Yes, we have more options. Yes, the economy may be a factor, but I must ask: What are we doing with our time? If it's just TV and social media, that's a sad commentary. We're better than that.

That's all I'm saying.

Editorial: Rubio should make good his threat to oppose tax cuts without changes

For once, it would be nice to see Sen. Marco Rubio stand up as the independent leader he aspires to become. For once, the Florida Republican should hold his position rather than bow to pragmatic politics. Rubio can stick with his threat Thursday to v...
