Hernando School District heavy-handed in teacher negotiations

Low morale is cited frequently as a top concern facing teachers. Educators will tell you they are burdened with paperwork, work long hours for relatively small pay and must deal with the top-down edicts passed through their administration from Tallahassee.

So, how does the Hernando School District propose to treat teachers as professionals and to boost morale?

By low-balling them on a contract offer. Then, watering down a revised proposal by tying higher wages to additional work and making newly hired educators wait longer for their first salary bump.

Worse yet, district contract negotiators entwined remuneration with attire. It is an insult to faculty members.

A professional organization that values its front-line, hard-working employees wouldn't have skimped in the first place, but that was the negotiating tactic. In June, the Hernando School Board offered a 1.14 percent salary increase while the Hernando Classroom Teachers' Association requested a 5.5 percent raise. It emerged as a leading policy debate in the Hernando School Board race, with candidates questioning if the district could afford a better offer.

Last week, the district confirmed that it could by submitting a revised proposal of a 3.5 percent average salary increase and a 1.5 percent jump to cover more expensive health insurance premiums. Unfortunately, it included additional caveats that devalued its worth — two additional staff meetings a month without compensation and making new hires wait 18 months for their first raise.

Those are details still to be negotiated. But the biggest cause for concern is the insistence by the administration of contract language covering teacher attire. Faculty members already are required to dress professionally.

Apparently, that isn't good enough. The contract proposal spelled out what could and could not be worn. It is a ridiculous overreaction to an undocumented problem. Principals already have the authority to require their staff members to dress appropriately.

Hernando's administrators should check with their brethren in Pasco for a lesson in avoiding such heavy-handed micro-management. Two years ago, top-level administrators in Pasco investigated a teacher dress code banning denim, forbidding popular capri pants for women and recommending neckties for men. The rationalization was that it would assist principals; the same logic is being used in Hernando.

Administrators in Pasco retreated, however, after a survey revealed 37 elementary school principals had conducted 71 one-on-one discussions with staff members about attire, or the equivalent of counseling 2 percent of the schools' workforce. Why change things when you have a 98 percent compliance rate?

Hernando administrators would be wise to follow suit. Adding a new dress code in an all-or-nothing contract proposal sends an ill-advised signal to teachers: They are more valued for their appearance than their performance.

Whine , Whine , Whine teachers about how you dress. I have never heard so much why because you should dress a certain way. I understand the classroom hot. My child is sweating along with you.
by bye Dr. A Sep 4, 2008 5:22 PM
He got his 5.5% raise, so he doesn't care about the teachers. This district really needs some help, quick! I'm going to be looking in Pasco soon for a job where at least SOME respect is given to those who educate the children. Sad in Hernando Co. :(
by Parents Sep 4, 2008 5:17 PM
To any parents that are experiencing problems with the Transportation department, contact Dr. Alexander, and the school board. Apparently there are a few supervisors who feel they are invincible! Dr. Alexander will resolve the issue.
by yeah Sep 4, 2008 4:39 PM
pay the teachers. rolback Alexander's increase. Hey Mrs Alexander get the DELLs done & in the schools. yes, let's vote them out. Superintendent should be voted on too.

When are we going to "PAY" Teachers, Police, Firefighters and Military people what they deserve? The're ultimate public servants and should be respected and honored. It's not right that these are the most underpaid. It's time to show them we care!!!

Beginning another well-run year with my gifted child at Chocachatti makes me so glad I avoided that mess at Explorer. What a fiasco they had at Explorer from day one. They promise all the newest technology but organizationally it's a nightmare.

I agree with Sharon. Where is she, and why is he hiding her? The pieces just don't add up. Why would you keep your wife hidden?
by The wife issue Sep 2, 2008 2:39 PM
It's against his contract to have a spouse who works for the district. This was put into effect after the Telone duo left to prevent conflict of interest. There are rumors the wife actually already worked for the district-if not let us know. NBD

The more I see in here, the more I am glad I left when I did! Hernando will continue to loose quality teachers and staff because of this administration
by upset teacher Aug 31, 2008 9:07 AM
How about that raise that Dr. A received?! Yet, I only received less than a $6 increase in my paycheck. Teachers are STILL losing their jobs as we speak and we received no money to buy supplies for our classrooms this school year!
by MJ Aug 31, 2008 9:07 AM
As a teacher with other teacher friends at almost every school in the county, I can tell you that morale is at its lowest. We feel unsupported/left out to dry. How long before that starts to become apparent to the students? Faking it goes only so far
by concerned teacher Aug 31, 2008 9:07 AM
Does Dr. A or the school board actually read these comments? Get the hint people....
by George B Aug 31, 2008 9:07 AM
I've seen teachers dressed in skirts/dresses shorter then students are allowed to wear. Tasteless. It's disturbing that the children have not been mentioned. What happened to teachers making a positive difference, instead they spew hatred? Sad!
by Reply to Disgusted Aug 31, 2008 9:07 AM
Apparently, you don't know much about kindergarten or have never tried to sit on the floor in a skirt. The posters comment was her way of pointing out that high heels and a business skirt is not the proper outfit for a kindergarten teacher.
by kelly Aug 31, 2008 9:06 AM
Sharon, people definitely dont get into teaching for the money, but they do have to live. Our county is struggling because of wasteful spending. Microphones at explorer, the big fence at hernando, more money for the super.. I could go on forever
by kelly Aug 31, 2008 9:06 AM
Teaching should be our most valued profession. If there were no teachers there could be no doctors, lawyers, judges, scientist, etc...
by beatenup Aug 31, 2008 9:06 AM
Yes Sharon I think about my children everyday and how they suffer because I teach. The fact that I have to work two jobs to support them because with three degrees working for HCSB I still qualify for free/reduced lunch. Adequate pay is a joke.
by teacher Aug 31, 2008 9:06 AM
I am here to teach, & understand that $ is not going to come with the economy in the way it is. However, we are disrespected & morale is HORRIBLE in the schools. Something needs to be done b/c it is not a joy to go to work in fear of what is coming
by stressed teacher Aug 31, 2008 9:06 AM
I don't care who he married. Rumor is she is a teacher. I hope she is at least on our side and can let him see exactly how this is affecting the kids. We want to be educators, but find it difficult when we live in fear & loathing of our "superiors"
by frustrated teacher Aug 31, 2008 9:06 AM
The morale at our schools has been on a steady decline since the arrival of Dr. Alexander. Teachers are beaten down at every opportunity by the school board, superintendent and some administrators. Teaching is a calling we breathe, sleep and eat this
by worried about the kids Aug 31, 2008 9:06 AM
In case parents aren't aware, teachers are being "transferred" some more. Your childs teacher who they have bonded with the past 2 wks may no longer be there in a few. Instead your child will be put in a rm w/ double the # of kids. TAKE A STAND!
by frustrated teacher Aug 31, 2008 9:06 AM
We pour hundreds and hundred of dollars of our own money into our classrooms only to be told by an administrator that anything left at school over the summer will be considered school property. So I have to take 1000 children's books home? asinine!
by Unified Aug 30, 2008 2:34 PM
Great point Mary!! Obviously Reach wants to stand behind him. When Alexander is ousted hopefully Reach will follow!
by Unified Aug 30, 2008 2:34 PM
Hey Sharon great point! So why did the CEO "The Man" ask for a 14% raise? He does nothing for the children. What example is he setting for the teachers?
by Unified Aug 30, 2008 2:34 PM
Reach why are you so not worried about who he married. Did he hook you up with a favor? Teachers should walk right out of this county. Go some where you are truly appreciated. Let the board, and Alexander figure it out!!
by Unified Aug 30, 2008 2:33 PM
Let me guess, Reach you must have been one of his buddies he hooked up. As a tax payer I refuse to let out school district be run into the ground. I refuse to let back door favors continue. This is all about the children. Im with you Vote them out!!
by Unified Aug 30, 2008 2:33 PM
Reach, because he has a contact stating he will not date or marry a distict employee. We already know he was having dinner dates with the only administrator who was promoted from Hernando High. If he is in violation he needs to be fired!!
by teacher ready to go Aug 29, 2008 5:56 PM
Pascoteacher, can't wait for you guys to hire out of county, I'm so there. Sharon, there is no talk of the children here because the article wasn't about the children. Comments are about the article and those who influence the contract.
by VOTE THEM OUT! Aug 29, 2008 4:16 PM
In response to Parent's question, the school board is allowing this to happen because Dr. A is giving them personal favors like Sweeney's wife's AP position at Explorer & Bonfield's family a position at County Office - a definite conflict for both.
by Charlie Aug 29, 2008 4:15 PM
Who did the master schedule at Explorer and did they know what they were doing? What experience did they have? Less than 30 minutes for lunch? Is that a violation of contract? Was any adm @ Exp. ready for the job? Did they have experience? Anyone???
by Sharon Aug 29, 2008 4:11 PM
In all of these comments I heard no mention of the children. Certainly, you didn't get into the field for the money. If you did, bad choice. I hope the teachers receive adequate pay but understand the financial strain the county is facing.
by Good pay for good work Aug 29, 2008 4:03 PM
It seems that in Hernando county teachers and slave labor mean the same thing. Very sad. The whole community loses with that mind set. But the community voted in the school board. What does that say about the community?
by Sharon Aug 29, 2008 4:02 PM

I can see things haven't changed they have only gotten worse since I left. I feel so bad for the teachers, they teach their hearts out and then get treated the way they are. I want to see some of these people work the way the teachers do.
by walkout Aug 28, 2008 9:58 AM
Vote this entire useless board out. Fire Alexander, Fire Ferello. Teachers need to strike and walk out. Stand up for your professionalism. You teachers are the only thing that matters! These administrators are nothing without you!
