Burmann responds to Times recommendations

Candidate replies

The Times offers candidates not recommended by its editorial board an opportunity to respond. Here is a reply to one of the recommendations for the Aug. 26 primary races.

Michael Burmann,

Republican candidate Hernando

Commission, District 1

I was not surprised that a liberal newspaper like the Times would recommend a moderate Republican like Jeff Stabins over a conservative Republican like myself. I believe government has grown too big and has overstepped its bounds into our personal lives.

Lawmakers have failed to protect the very people they are elected to serve. An example of this is when they repaved highly used roads like Waterfall drive the week before Christmas. If they had waited just two weeks, the traffic volume would have been extremely less. Now, we have a much-needed road repair at Deltona and Spring Hill Drive that has gone nowhere all summer, which means it will be started after the kids go back to school. Did they not realize there is a school just one-half mile from that intersection?

As for the wastefulness, how about the purchase of the homes on Elgin Boulevard at inflated prices and then stopping the project due to a lack of funding? I believe that as a conservative, I can cut spending by eliminating waste, but also be compassionate to those in need. Let's give those in need a hand up, not a handout.
