Hernando Letters for the Editor: Higher taxes preferred over deteriorating county

RECOMMENDED READING

Paying taxes is a reality of living

New anti-tax county commissioners do not want to raise taxes, again. Whether water tax, gas tax or property tax, they will not raise taxes. Florida just voted in even more property tax exemptions. Who fixes the potholes on our increasing number of streets? Gives more money to the sheriff? Gives raises to workers? Pays more pensions?

Anti-tax states are having hard times with money shortages, having to cut schools' budgets, cut services, defer maintenance, lose infrastructure, blowing budgets and digging themselves into debt. Businesses don't thrive just because of low taxes. Businesses need customers who spend and a good living environment. Rutty roads, poor schools and poor employees don't improve the business environment.

Nobody likes to pay taxes, but it's like eating vegetables — it's good for you, so you eat them anyway. Raising gas and property taxes is more fair than water taxes, since many don't pay for water, but we all indirectly pay for property and gas taxes.

I own property and prefer higher taxes and a healthy county, rather than lower taxes and a deteriorating county. Continue hunting waste and fraud, but it costs money to live in the United States, and that means paying taxes.
