Support our brave police officers | Oct. 30, letter

Leaders showing officers disdain

The letter writer laments that our police officers are more often than not looked upon with scorn or contempt and his opinion is right on the money. But this scorn doesn't come from the public, it comes from our Legislature and governor.

It's no secret law enforcement is concerned with the increasing hostility our Legislature and governor have towards the needs of law enforcement. Law enforcement needs proactive crime control statutes to help suppress crime before it happens. Over the years our Legislature and governors have slowly reduced law enforcements ability to act before the trigger is pulled and the crime takes place. This has had a direct impact on officer safety and morale.

Far too many missed the Sept. 1 Times article Gun laws come under fire and a Tribune article the same date Local officials face penalties for gun laws which recorded the passage of a clean-up firearms preemption law HB-45 demanded by the NRA that canceled all remain local proactive crime laws, our last line of defense the police could deployed legally to suppress crime in our local areas. Now law enforcement must wait until the trigger is pulled or the crime goes down before they can act.

Putting law enforcement in jail with fines if they didn't destroy the gun laws the NRA wanted destroyed is one of the best examples of the hostility

Our Legislature and governor are hostile toward law enforcement's legitimate needs to protect us and lawmakers continue to support the NRA's never-ending drive to destroy gun control laws and to drive more guns into more places nobody wants.

Hildebrand says no 8th term Oct. 28, article

Information key in election season

Interesting historical article on Ann Hildebrand not running for an eighth term on the County Commission. As a Republican when she supported Penny for Pasco, I knew of her liberal tendencies. Now she is considering a state seat. So, I guess, she can triple dip. If it is legal, who can blame her?

As for Sen. Mike Fasano running for a state House seat and Rep. John Legg's comment that only God could beat him — it is a strong statement. But not reporting who already filed to run for the seat cannot be just an oversight. It's a long time to the election, but let's just report the news and not try to direct the populace.

Everyone reads what is said in the paper and we all know that which is not said can be just as important. It will be a long election season next year. Let's start on the right foot.
