Letters: Sheriff should recommend the source of new funding

Pasco County Sheriff’s Office

Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco is asking the county to increase the Sheriff’s Office budget by 6 percent to $96 million.

Ask sheriff where to find funding

Pasco Sheriff Chris Nocco has asked for a significant increase in his department's budget for 2015. As a citizen of Pasco County I understand the need for the increase in funding.

Pasco will not become a "premier county" without responsible funding of county services. The current levels of funding, as the sheriff has explained, results in an unsustainable scenario in which the Pasco Sheriff's Office becomes the training center for better-funded positions in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. Here I share common ground with Sheriff Nocco.

My question to the sheriff is, as an elected constitutional officer of Pasco County, I feel it is his obligation to the citizens who elected him to not only request the funding but to explain from where he thinks the funding should come. The county, as he well knows, has limited resources. Is he suggesting other county programs should be cut or is he advocating for an increase in taxes and fees? As a leader in our community I believe he has the responsibility not only to make the request for funding but also present input as to how the funding should be secured.

I understand that ultimately these decisions rest on the Board of County Commissioners but I also believe he, as an elected official, has the duty to address these issues to his constituents.
