Letters: Sheriff's Office website should not allow comments

Stop comments on mug shots

I came across the Pasco Sheriff's Office Facebook page. There are some neat posts on it, but it also posts pictures of criminals. I even saw a sub-caption that invited people to make fun of the person ("Look at his T-shirt."), and lots of people write mean-spirited things.

It's easy to forget that the people depicted often are sick. They are addicts. They make bad choices. They don't take care of their appearance. People should show a bit of class and human dignity.

This is the message I sent:

"Are you posting pictures of suspected criminals for people to make fun of? What is that, the post-modern version of the pillory? You might want to look up that word, and while you're at it, take a gander at the Constitution, which clearly prohibits cruel and unusual punishment. Public mockery would be an example of that."

Where's the need for charter vote

State Rep. Richard Corcoran wants Pasco voters to fix something we didn't even know was broken. He believes we need charter government, saying voters need local control. Don't we have control and term-limit empowerment if all voters get to elect all the county commissioners, based on their performance?

C.T. Bowen is correct to be skeptical. The history lesson of the last attempt was enlightening, especially the rejection by almost three-quarters of voters in 1976. I wonder what this new effort will cost, if the 1970s fuss had a $30,000 budget? What are we not talking about or working on if the commission and county staff are taking the time to work on fixing our local government, instead of the regular business?

Rep. Corcoran should convince us it is broken before we get out the tools.

Moon Lake road needs sidewalks

Lake Drive is the main road in Moon Lake. Women and children have to walk in the road to go anywhere. This is not the 1960s. More and more people live in Moon Lake, and a bunch of kids use the road, day and night.

It's about time the county puts in sidewalks before someone gets run over. Get with the times. Moon Lake seems to be ignored because tourists never see.
