Letters to tbt*: Follow the money, down the drain

Re: Crist releases tax returns (tbt* June 26)

Charlie Christ is a former governor working at a high profile law firm — nice work if you can get it, but nothing shocking about his wages. I did find it interesting that while he was busy building a better tomorrow for Florida, Rick Scott managed to pick up a cool $50 million in net worth in a year. I began to wonder just how someone could manage to do such a thing. I feared he had been engaged in shady dealings with the SkunkApes.

Luckily, my fears only lived as long as it took to read John Romano's column about the failed property insurance companies on the opposite page. Between the $436 million in bankruptcy filings and the untold millions they siphoned off to their management companies, these failed companies have taken quite a bit of money out of Florida's economy. Money that is never coming back.

All of a sudden Scott's $50 million seems quite reasonable. Especially when you consider that the property insurance mess is only one of many avenues Scott is using to bleed Florida dry.

A pretty serious miss

Re: Mix-up, recount bring a new Miss Florida (tbt* June 30)

Seems to me, and maybe others, that Elizabeth Fechtel should really get something out of this mix-up. Geez, she got the Miss Florida crown only to be shot down because some judge changed his so-called "mind" under the wire. The pageant says it had to protect its integrity. Integrity? What a big joke.

Elizabeth should be compensated for her heartache and pain.
