Jack cheers for private interests

In the latest candidate debates Commissioner Jack Mariano said he is proud to be a "cheerleader" for SunWest-Harbourtowne project.

Here is what Jack is cheering for: A permit request to dredge a channel from the gulf to the proposed Harbourtowne site large enough for an oil tanker. The dredging will cause extensive damage to sea grass that is essential to the gulf eco-system, with proposed mitigation for the damage sometime in the future.

Jack is cheering for spending taxpayer money to make it possible for the proposed Harbourtowne housing development to have a marina and for large yachts to access to the gulf. Taxpayer money will be spent so private interests can profit.

Commissioner Mariano is cheering for an unneeded, environmentally damaging project paid for, in part, by public expense so wealthy yacht owners will purchase homes and a private developer profit.

Beware golf carts on the sidewalk

Recently, I was waking on the sidewalk on Gulf Boulevard toward U.S. 19 when I was confronted by a golf cart heading right at me.

The cart took up all of the sidewalk and then some. I was forced off the sidewalk as carefully as I could as I have a fractured foot.

I called up city hall and asked when a law was passed to allow the carts on the sidewalk. I was told they weren't and the next time it happened to call the police.
