Say no to plan for trash pickup
I am writing to protest the mandatory trash collection proposal. We do not use municipal trash collection now and we do not want to be forced to do so in the future. The recycling center in the county is a rare example of an efficiently run government entity. The people are polite, it is clean and should be a source of pride, not something to get rid of.
These giant cans the commissioners suggest will be a blight on the neighborhoods and will not prevent people from throwing recyclables into them. Not to mention the number of people who will just decide to use our wooded areas for their personal dump.
Since voting no on this issue will be nonbinding, maybe voting on the commissioners should be nonbinding and include an option to get rid of them in six months if we are unhappy with their performance!

GOP flier about Rowden is slimy
Recently, my household received a mailer published by the Republican Party of Florida smearing Diane Rowden on a Sunshine Law violation that took place 20 years ago when she was a School Board member. Diane Rowden has served her county and community for over 20 years with the utmost integrity and care for her fellow citizens. These smear tactics conducted by the Republican Party are out of context as documented by the St. Petersburg Times on Oct. 30 2008.
The flier fails to mention a grand jury indicted all five members of the board for discussing public business in private with other board members and the Democratic governor's decision to remove her from the board was reversed by the state Supreme Court, which ruled Gov. Lawton Chiles didn't have the authority to oust a constitutional officer.
Later the suspension was referred to the state Senate and in committee it was recommended that she be reinstated. When sent to a vote by the Senate the recommendation was tabled, and her suspension remained till her term ran out.
There is no question that the flier is misleading and is a continued political slander of Diane Rowden after an infraction for which she paid her penalty. Since then the voters of Hernando County elected Diane Rowden to two terms as a county commissioner, where she served the people of Hernando County honorably.

Thanks for aiding dog hit by a car
On the way home with my daughter, we found a dog that had been hit by a car. By the time we turned around to come back, several people had pulled over as well.
I want to thank all the people who helped with securing the safety of this dog, and all the people who passed by, offering assistance. The dog was not mine, but it shows that we people do care about living creatures. It taught my daughter, and several other kids in the other vehicles, that people do care about other living beings.
We have two dogs in our family and we know how much of an impact losing one of them could be. Once again, thank you to all the people who had the courtesy to stop and offer help.
