SR 56 extension on road to reality

I could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the article concerning the groundbreaking ceremony for the start of construction of State Road 56 extension. It is at 10:30 a.m. March 19.

Yes, Virginia, miracles can happen.

The residents of Meadow Pointe have waited three years (maybe longer) for this much-needed road to start construction.

I will personally attend to make sure this wasn't all a dream and that the nightmare is over.

Raymond Kobasko,

Enjoy the smaller beaches in area

I'm a Florida native living in this area most of my life. In the late 1960s and '70s, my mother had a bait stand and gift store in Hudson — Suzanne's Mini Store on Old Dixie Highway — which is now the site of the French restaurant. My dad had many marinas in Pinellas.

Boy, have I seen the changes. To those of you who want better beaches, west Pasco County has changed our beaches for the better. Hudson Beach has really come a long way. I do know Green Key Beach in New Port Richey is very nice now compared to when I was growing up. I'm 48 now and I've never seen any of our beaches looking nicer than they are now.

Unfortunately, our beaches do get bacteria in the heat of the summer. But so do most Florida beaches on the West Coast as well as Red Tide, etc. Heed the precautions.

Those of you that don't mind traveling a little, may want to go to Pine Island in Homosassa Springs. Or to a pretty little beach or to Dunedin and Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island, which is a state park and is beautiful. There is a lot of wild life. My father had the concession stand in the early 1980s. At Caladesi, you pay a fee and take a ferry boat over. It was rated the second best beach in Florida last year. I have not been there since my dad had his business.

To those of you that don't like our beaches, we don't have beautiful huge beaches in west Pasco like in Clearwater or Daytona Beach. Our beaches are small and pretty. But then again we are not a huge city like they are either and look at their coast lines.

I've learned to love our beaches. If you absolutely can't drive to our beaches, do the next best thing and travel to the nearest beach and enjoy what God gave us.

Gina Jones Muster, Hudson

A gun can prevent crime, aid safety

I would like to enlighten some people about lawful gun ownership and the right to carry a gun.

We, who have and carry weapons, should be viewed as a comfort to others when a situation arises that warrants use of a weapon to prevent harm to innocent persons at a time it is not possible for the police to respond.

I would not hesitate to put my safety on the line if I thought I could stop the abduction of a child or any other unthinkable crime.

The police cannot be instantly at every location where criminal events are in progress.
