Deputies identify 2-year-old boy who drowned in backyard pool while grandfather was watching him

NEW PORT RICHEY — A 2-year-old boy drowned in a pool Monday evening while his grandfather went to use the bathroom, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies tried to save Devin Vatter by performing CPR on him after they received a call at 7:10 p.m. to the house along the 10000 block of Indian Mound Drive. Pasco County Fire Rescue arrived and the boy was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The grandfather had been caring for the boy. The child got out of the house when the grandfather went to use the bathroom.

The grandfather's name has not been released, but the man was the paternal grandfather of the child, whose father had passed, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Kevin Doll.

The death is under investigation.
