They are family: Tampa Bay same-sex couples share their stories

The U.S. Supreme Court will soon decide the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and rule on whether or not the federal government can deny marriage benefits to legally married same-sex couples. As journalists, we're tasked with understanding and explaining how national issues affect our communities. We wanted to find out what equality means to the Tampa Bay area's same-sex couples. What are their stories? How will the DOMA decision affect their daily lives? We spent two months finding, photographing, recording and listening to same-sex families talk about the extra steps they have to take in Florida to protect their loved ones. We wanted their voices to resonate since they're the ones who will be impacted by the Supreme Court's decision this month.
