All Eyes gallery: Monica Herndon’s favorite photos of 2017
I think I say this every year, but 2017 was a year of incredible growth. I spent the first half of the year completing my work on the Why Cops Shoot project and working closely with Dirk Shadd on the Hot Wheels project about juvenile auto theft. <br>

During the spring I followed the last Hillsborough County dairy farm to their new home in Georgia. This was the first project that I’ve seen completely through; from conception to publication. I spent the second half of the year following college football in Florida. A season that started with high hopes for the Seminoles ended with the Hurricanes in the ACC Championship and an Orange Bowl invitation. As the year wraps up, I’m realizing how grateful I am for a job where I can cover such varied topics. I’m looking forward to next year and all of the surprises that come with it.
I am a photojournalist at the Tampa Bay Times in St. Petersburg, Florida. I cover college football, daily features and shoot, produce and edit narrative videos. Before moving to St. Pete, I interned at the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Baltimore Sun Media Group. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Visual Journalism from the University of Miami in 2014 and attended the NYTimes Portfolio Review in 2017.
