Bloomsday is named after James Joyce’s Ulysses’ central character, Leopold Bloom, and marks the day on which the action of the novel takes place, June 16th, and follows the life and thoughts of Bloom and a host of other colorful characters as they travel through the streets of Dublin.

Welcome to Bloomsday, the best new reason to grab a book, a beer and a friend.The Tampa Bay Arts & Education Network (TBAE) and O’Brien’s Irish Pub in Brandon are hosting Tampa’s third annualBloomsday, a celebration of all things Joycean to raise awareness of Irish literature and the joy of reading in the company of friends.
“Joyce’s words are meant to be read aloud…..‘Hoopsa boyaboy hoopsa!’looks silly on paper but comes alive when you hear it,” said Lucy Griggs of TBAE Network.“This is an evening of fun with limericks, music and group readings, celebrating the joy of reading in the company of friends.”
The readings will begin with localcelebrities Steve Otto and Brendan McLaughlin reading choice bits ofUlyssess followed by The Limerick Championship semi-finalist reciting their entries, in hopes of being crowned the 2012 Limerick Championship and wining the$250cash prize and trip to Las Vegas voucher.
Fans of traditional Irish music will be happy to hear, and sing along with, the Irish Buskers,a local five-person Celtic music band that plays some songs that are traditional, some that are melodic and sweet, and some that are well-known sing-along pub songs.
