Leonardo Villanueva's concert will entertain and inspire!
Tampa, FL - (April 30, 2013) - GMA Dove Award winning bilingual artist, Leonardo Villanueva, will perform a concert to benefit Trinity Cafe, a local homeless feeding organization, on Saturday, June 15 at 7:00pm at First United Methodist Church of Lutz.
Leonardo and Trinity Cafe's relationship began in 2009 when, after winning the Dove Award for "Spanish Language Album of the Year " (the Christian music industry's highest honor, equivalent to the Grammy), Leonardo embarked on a pilgrimage to raise awareness for the homeless community in Tampa. He decided to go undercover and experience the homeless life first hand. For 3 days and 3 nights on that blazing hot summer, he lived among the homeless in downtown Tampa with no other earthly possession but the clothes on his back and a Bible. He slept under the stars on the steps of Sacred Heart Church and even at the Salvation Army shelter. Each day, he would post an account of his journey from the public library on his "Leo the Homeless Man" Facebook page to keep his followers up to date. A friend would meet him in a back alley at the end of each day to tape a brief video blog for YouTube. At the end of his journey, and with the help of a handful of church folk, Leonardo was able to provide new clothes, food, and other provisions to some of the homeless men he befriended along the way.
But it was Trinity Cafe that fed Leonardo during his time as a homeless man. "As I waited in line to go into Trinity, tears began coming down from my eyes as I felt the humiliation of not being able to provide for myself the most basic needs", commented the Latino singer-songwriter. "And once inside, tears flowed again as what seemed like an angel disguised as a smiling volunteer served me a hot cup of soup to begin my meal." So impressed was Villanueva with the organization's work, that he began volunteering periodically to experience the joy of being on the giving end this time. And now, he wants to also give back to the place that gave to him so much more than a hot meal during his homeless pilgrimage: Love, compassion, and dignity.
“At Trinity Cafe humanity begins with a meal,” says program director, Cindy Davis. “Our volunteers demonstrate the humanity Leo experienced to every guest day in and day out.”
