PolitiFact, the Pulitzer Prize-winning fact-checking website powered by the Tampa Bay Times, is teaming up with MTV to launch “Fantasy Election ’12.”

The first-of-its-kind game will give young people a new way to hold presidential and congressional candidates accountable and reward youth for getting involved in Election ’12.

PolitiFact’s ratings on candidate statements will help determine the value of a player's team.

When PolitiFact rates a statement from “True” to “Pants on Fire,” players will gain or lose points for their team.

“The MTV game is a really fun and engaging way to follow the campaign and learn about the real-life choices that candidates make,” said Bill Adair, editor of PolitiFact. “We’re glad to have the Truth-O-Meter put to such great use.”

PolitiFact is participating in the project – which is part of MTV’s “Power of 12” campaign – along with Knight Foundation, foursquare, Get Glue, RealClearPolitics, Project Vote Smart, Center for Responsive Politics, Rock the Vote and the Wesleyan Media Project.

Similar to Fantasy Football, “Fantasy Election ’12” enables users to draft a team of candidates pursuing the presidency or Congress, earning and losing points based on how their players behave in the real world. Users will also earn bonus points for real world actions like registering to vote, voting, and testing their political knowledge. Overall, success in the game will be based on two things: how candidates behave and what players do. Top players are eligible to win
prizes.

More details on “Fantasy Election ‘12” will be announced this summer.
