Dr. Snider's childhood dream to build a hospital came true in January 1957 and that dream continued to grow into the Sun Coast Hospital in Largo. In five decades, the hospital grew from a 24-bed facility to a full-service, 200-bed acute care medical and surgical non-profit teaching hospital. The life and times of Dr. Snider are intimately intertwined with the founding of the hospital, which ultimately became for-profit upon its sale in 2008.
It’s estimated that over 1,000 Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine have trained as interns and residents at Sun Coast Hospital, which is now Largo Medical Center - Indian Rocks Road Campus. "No one physician has influenced the growth of Osteopathic Medicine on the West Coast of Florida more than Alan J. Snider, D.O.," stated Karen Nichols, D.O., President of the American Osteopathic Association (A.O.A.). Dr. Nichols presented Dr. Snider with the prestigious national award called “Great Pioneers in Osteopathic Medicine.” The award is reserved for A.O.A. members who made pivotal decisions and took decisive action at critical times for the Osteopathic profession. The award was presented at the 2011 Annual President's Dinner of the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society.
The Sun Coast Osteopathic Foundation, formerly the Sun Coast Hospital Foundation, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to the fulfillment of Dr. Snider's dedication and service to the City of Largo and surrounding communities.
