Oct. 2, 2009 — West Palm Beach

Just before 3 p.m., a shopper told off-duty Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy Donald Smith that a man inside the grocery store had a gun in his waistband.

According to the sheriff's office, Smith confronted Jamil Murray, 28, and ordered him to put up his hands. When asked if he had a gun, Murray lifted his shirt and pulled out a kitchen knife. Thinking he was about to be attacked, Deputy Smith fired twice, killing Murray, the sheriff's office said.

Murray was a frequent customer at the store, according to witnesses. One said that Murray told Smith that he didn't have a gun, then reached for the knife. Read more

Relatives said that he carried the knife for protection. They sued and received a settlement of $80,000.

This was the 103rd police shooting in Florida in 2009.

Two days earlier, one officer shot one person in Sarasota .
