Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Black pulled over Clifton Austin Salter's red pickup for speeding.

Investigators believe that Salter, 60, pulled a handgun and shot himself through the roof of his mouth. The wound, however, was not fatal.

When Trooper Black knocked on the truck's passenger window, he said that Salter ignored commands to drop his weapon. He raised the .25-caliber handgun toward Black, who fired three shots through the window and into Salter's chest. Salter again moved the gun toward Black, who fired two more rounds, authorities said. Salter was pronounced dead at the scene. Read more
