April 11, 2014 — Pensacola

Thomas Eugene Fillingim, 53, was shot once in the stomach after he lunged at a deputy with a knife, according to the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.

The incident took place in a home in the 3100 block of Bent Oak Road early on the morning of April 11, 2014, Sheriff David Morgan said. Fillingim had sliced himself across the neck. His daughter called 911 after Fillingim threatened her when she tried to take the knife away from him.

She was barricaded in the bathroom when Deputy Albert Kalber arrived. He found Fillingim in a hallway with a folding knife. Read more

The sheriff's office said that Fillingim lunged at the deputy, who fired at him. Fillingim died at the hospital. He had been reported as suicidal the night before.

This was the 35th police shooting in Florida in 2014.
