July 23, 2013 — Orlando

Officer Jason Hajek pulled up behind Demetrius Patterson, who had run a red light and was driving recklessly.

Patterson, 23, and his passenger got out of the car and ran.

Officer Hajek chased Patterson around the side of a house, where the two exchanged gunfire. Hajek was hit in the abdomen, Patterson in the foot. Read more

Patterson hobbled to his cousin's house but was persuaded to surrender hours later.

Jarod Gardiner, the passenger, was detained when he came out of a wooded area. Patterson was sentenced to life in prison for the attempted murder of an officer.

Gardiner said they ran because there were drugs in the car.

This was the 78th police shooting in Florida in 2013.

Five days earlier, three officers shot one person in Pembroke Pines .

Four days later, two officers shot one person in Warrington .
