Det. Joe Legrasta spotted a vehicle believed to be carrying three teens accused of breaking into an unoccupied home and stealing jewelry.

He tried to perform a traffic stop. As he got out of his patrol unit, police said, the teens' car lurched toward Lagrasta, who shot at driver Kerome Paisley, 18, six times.

Paisley was struck in the thigh and the head but lived. He was sentenced to four years in prison for aggravated assault on an officer, grand theft and burglary. Read more
