Bruenger shouted "Gun! Gun!," drew his weapon and fired several rounds, killing Sweeny.

Nicole Maldonado, who called in the assault, threw herself on Sweeny and screamed that Sweeny was her boyfriend and was the victim of the assault she had reported.

The two had gotten into an argument with their roommate, the son of the mayor of Lake City, who later returned with his brother.

The brother assaulted Sweeny as he slept and then both men fled. Maldonado said Sweeny's eye was swollen shut and his nose was broken and he never raised his gun.

Bruenger was awarded a Medal of Bravery by the police department for the shooting.

This was the 91st police shooting in Florida in 2012.

The same day, one officer shot one person in Pensacola .

Three days later, one officer shot two people in Miami .
