May 18, 2014 — Orlando

Off-duty Officer Robert Schellhorn was investigating a shooting when he saw the suspect trying to get in a white Lincoln.

Police said the driver of the Lincoln accelerated toward Schellhorn, who gave verbal commands to stop and, fearing for his life, fired twice into the front windshield at the driver.

Police later found the vehicle with blood in the interior and learned that Tavaris Bentley, 24, had been shot in the hand and was willing to cooperate with police.

This was the 55th police shooting in Florida in 2014.

Two days earlier, five officers shot one person in Miami .
