March 13, 2013 — Miami

Shortly before midnight, a call came in about a suspicious man looking into cars.

Police questioned Juan Rodriguez, 44, but he gave false information and didn't have a reasonable explanation of why he was there. When they tried to arrest him, he fought back, then jumped in a police cruiser and, according to authorities, tried to run down officers in an escape attempt.

One officer fired at Rodriguez, killing him. Read more

Rodriguez' record includes robbery, burglary, possession of cocaine and battery.

Rodriguez' family was suspicious of the police account, saying it did not match the "Johnny" Rodriguez that they knew, a man trying to "put his past behind him." Rodriguez was recovering from shoulder surgery and, they believed, was not strong enough to overcome a police officer.

This was the 36th police shooting in Florida in 2013.

Nine days later, one officer shot one person in West Palm Beach .
