Dec. 29, 2014 — St. Augustine

Two children knocked on a neighbor's door and told him that their parents had "killed themselves," just before 9:15 p.m.

In fact, 48-year-old Timothy Edward West was still alive, but he had shot his wife dead. When Sgt. James Priester and Deputy Joshua Butler arrived at the home, West was coming out the front door holding a 12-gauge shotgun. He could be heard on the neighbor's phone call to the 911 dispatcher refusing commands to drop the weapon.

According to the sheriff's office, he raised the shotgun toward the officers. Sgt. Priester fired eight rounds from his handgun. Butler fired 10 rounds from his. West was hit in the head and neck and died at the scene. Read more
