Selena Gomez undergoes kidney transplant due to lupus

Selena Gomez, the most followed celebrity on Instagram, shared some surprising news to her 117 million followers on Thursday.

The actor-singer received a kidney transplant due to lupus, posting a photo of herself and donor, TV actor and friend Francia Raisa, in hospital gowns holding hands. Gomez revealed her diagnosis back in 2015 and took a short hiatus to deal with panic attacks and depression.

Gomez, 25, shared that she was staying out of the spotlight this summer to focus on her recovery.

"It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you," she wrote in the caption.

I’m very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn’t promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of. So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health. I honestly look forward to sharing with you, soon my journey through these past several months as I have always wanted to do with you. Until then I want to publicly thank my family and incredible team of doctors for everything they have done for me prior to and post-surgery. And finally, there aren’t words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis. Lupus continues to be very misunderstood but progress is being made. The post, which also included a photo of her scar, did not include when the surgery took place, though TMZ reported that she was rushed to a Chicago hospital back in May while in town to see boyfriend The Weeknd perform.

"There aren't words to describe how I can possibly thank my beautiful friend Francia Raisa. She gave me the ultimate gift and sacrifice by donating her kidney to me. I am incredibly blessed. I love you so much sis," she wrote.

Raisa, 29, is best known for roles in The Secret Life of the American Teenager and Bring it On: All of Nothing.
