Times reporter Thomas Lake interviewed Roger Wayne Morgan, a convicted felon and the founder of Academic Financial Services, on the afternoon of April 17. Also present was his business associate Christina Barry. This part of the interview concerns Morgan’s arrest on July 13, 1994, on a charge of armed kidnapping. While prosecutors dropped that charge, citing trouble with witnesses, a report from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office quotes several people involved in the incident as saying that it centered on a botched drug deal. Two of them said it was an $11,000 Ecstasy deal. As the document above shows, Morgan himself told investigators that it was a drug deal. But in this interview he said something entirely different.
