Plume cleanup a long haul
The toxic contamination that is spreading under St. Petersburg's Azalea neighborhood from the Raytheon plant has reached to the edge of an elementary school and showed up in a nearby creek flowing to Boca Ciega Bay. The plume includes toulene, vinyl chloride, 1,4-dioxane cis-1,2-Dichloroethene and trichloroethylene. The company says it will soon begin a limited cleanup on its own property, using a system called "pump and treat." Meanwhile, it must come up with a plan to deal with the entire plume.
